You all see those pairs of eyes in all four directions in every Buddhist monastery and stupas in Nepal. Probably the thoughts strucked your mind every time that “ what exactly do they mean? “ and “why are there those unique symbols?”. Well, those are the eyes of Buddha that look in all four directions. It symbolizes the all-around seeing of Buddha. Between the nose, is the curly symbol that looks like a question mark. It is the Nepali character for number one and that symbolizes unity of all the things as well as the one way to reach enlightenment- through the Buddha’s teachings.
There is a Dot or ‘Bindu’ symbol above the pair of eyes, which is regarded as the third eye ( Tri-netra ) of Buddha . It symbolizes the all-seeing wisdom of the Buddha. It is associated with religious visions and those who can utilize the third eye are often known as ‘Seers’. According to Buddhist belief, every being can attain the eyes of Wisdom and can see beyond the material world. Even though people may fall themselves in the darkness of greed, ignorance and hatred, with the light of wisdom , one can ignite bright through it.
Lord Buddha is the Light of Asia as he himself is the emblem of wisdom and peace. His teaching revolves around his knowledge, insight and conscience after he entered Nirvana. As a fact, the eyes of Buddha are known as ‘ The Eyes of Wisdom’ . It is the representation of the omnipotent powers of all seeing and looking out in all four directions as well as in various flows of time.
